Portugal Wedding Venue Spotlight: Penha Longa Resort & Monastery

A beautiful Portuguese wedding venue

Earlier this year my husband and I were fortunate enough to experience the unparalleled luxury & elegance of Penha Longa Resort.

Let me share with you our experience through my eyes. Not only as a guest at the resort but also as an experienced, award-winning wedding planner.

If you’re dreaming of hosting a destination wedding in Portugal it’s a perfect read for you.

Penha Longa Resort Overview

Penha Longa Resort is situated around 30 minutes east of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. With what I can only describe as stunning scenery along the short drive. (My husband especially enjoyed playing chauffer in our little white Fiat 500).

From the moment we arrived the hotel staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive. Whilst we sipped a glass of chilled champagne, they checked us in, and made us feel incredibly at ease.

As we were guided to our room, we noticed the scent emanating throughout the spacious, elegantly decorated corridors. So calming and relaxing, and we genuinely wanted to bottle it up and bring it home with us!

It’s these little details that make all the difference don’t you think?

Many of the bedrooms at this Portugal wedding venue have recently undergone a lavish renovation, ensuring a more modern and luxurious experience.

We were immensely impressed with our room with its breathtaking views over the immaculately kept grounds and the 27-hole golf course.  Ranked in the top 30 Courses in Continental Europe and top 10 in Portugal, if you’re a fan!

They must have known I was coming, as the room came complete with a Nespresso machine, a plate of chocolates (in the unmistakable shape and warming pink shade of the hotel). Iron (I don’t do creases), sewing kit and many other well thought out details.

Showing how much care and attention the Penha Longa Resort team has put into ensuring a relaxing stay for all.

Penha Longa Resort as a Portugal Wedding Venue

The main reason for our stay was for me as a destination wedding planner to have the opportunity to experience and tour their wedding event spaces. And they didn’t disappoint.

Penha Longa Resort’s 14th Century Monastery is a one-of-a-kind venue. Nestled in a serene location within the resort.

I must point out that not only do you have exclusive use of the wedding space, but you are also under no obligation to stay at the hotel. Or book a set number of bedrooms.

This kind of flexibility is a key feature I look for as a destination wedding planner.

If your guests do choose to stay on site, they are treated to a short walk through the beautifully kept grounds to the wedding ceremony.

Or if traveling to the venue on the big day there is a separate car park to that of the hotel.

The Monastery has no noise restriction nor time limitation (perfect for those of you who want to throw a roaring after party).

Ceremony Options

Within in the setting is the most divine 16th Century Chapel.

If you’re wishing to host a religious ceremony there will be a few hoops to jump through. It’s totally worth it, if one of you at least are Catholic, and have always dreamed of a religious ceremony combined with a destination wedding.

However, if your wedding vision looks more like a dreamy outdoor ceremony under rich blue Portuguese skies. With a gentle breeze enveloping your family & friends. Then the green lawns of the 14th century monastery offer the perfect setting.

Walking through the gardens to your beloved is certainly a beautiful romantic way to start your married life together.

If you’re ready to push the boat out, there is another alternative for your ceremony and something rather unique.

Still within the grounds of the hotel, and also totally exclusive to you and your guests. There are the ruins.

These can be left very natural. Or it’s possible to have a stage and aisle built for you to stand over the water within the ruins, whilst exchanging your wedding vows.

After the ceremony guests will be invited to enjoy chilled champagne & luxurious canapes on the opposite lawn of your Portugal wedding venue. Imagine a string quartet gently playing in the background. Alongside the hum of laughter, chatter and the gentle clink of elegant glassware.

Wedding Breakfast

With many couples choosing to marry later in the day, the experienced venue staff advise you to host your wedding breakfast in one of the stunning indoor spaces.

The most popular being Sala Dos Arcos, the former stables of the Monastery. Its clerical, classical image has been retained and it is a unique and special spot.

Evening Party

Your evening celebrations can take place outside in the most stunning of walled courtyards. Complete with typical Portuguese tiled walls. You can dance the night away to the small hours, should you so wish.

Gastronomic Delights

Catering for your destination wedding at Penha Longa Monastery is taken care of by the Penha Longa Catering company.  This expert culinary team offers a range of delicious menu options to suit every guest’s taste.

Whilst staying at the resort we experienced firsthand the excellent service at one of the hotel’s 7 restaurants, one of which holds a Michelin star. We enjoyed exquisitely served dishes accompanied by perfectly chilled blush rose wine (I’m very picky!)

And the company was perfect too xx

I’ve spent most of my life in the wedding & events industry. Helping couples in love to celebrate in style is something I adore and am hugely proud of being able to do.

At the very heart of my job is a love of people. A chance to connect with couples is one of my favourite parts. Being a wedding planner means being able to balance the detail-focused organisation and expert problem solving with the chance to have a good chat and a laugh with couples over a cuppa or a glass of fizz.
